Poetry reqires the mind and soul
not a lot of people have a pure enough soul, or the want to create somthing beautiful.
they are alos lazy!!!

.
1. Not everybody is inclined towards words.
2. It requires interpretation, and many cannot be bothered or are not equipped to do so.
3. When they do bother, the introspection it involves [for some] may come too close for comfort.
4. People wish they could write that well.
5. PURE LAZINESS.

 epiphanies are the spice of life.
People are too lazy, and don't ever have enough time in their days to sit down and use their thinkers and make something beautiful, but they can sit down and make something that is exactly like somebody else's and that is considered art? If a poem resembles somebody else's art, it is considered copying, but when a character or setting or storyline is copied, it's just a remake? No fair. No one can sit and think of something new for a change.

"Man. . . . . I just failed all over myself."
"You have to unzip it first you dumbass!"
"That's what she said."
i think it really just comes down to the fact that people don't want to sit down and actually have to read! god forbid it! but thats what i think is causing the issue.

alot of different arts can be faked to a certain extent. people CAN go around and just take random shots, maybe get lucky with a few clicks. good poetry isn't something you can fake, or go half ass on. You have to be able to put everythin you've got into it.. either emotionally or intellectually. Alot of people can't be bothered with the time it takes to write decent literature like that. Luckily there still are a good few, otherwise I'd be out of luck :]

You laugh because I'm different. I laugh because you're all the same.

I embrace my nerdiness!!! XD
Not a lot of people want to delve beyond what's on the surface. They're afraid of what they may see in others, the world, and themselves.

Ignorance is bliss?
& you can't Photoshop poetry...

I agree with everyone's answers so far in some way, but I'd like to add that poetry is deeply personal and it seems that now days people are very wrapped up in themselves. To read poetry by someone other than themselves makes no sense to them because the poem "isn't about" them. Basically, I blame the decrease in popularity of poetry on the decrease of empathy in people.

People don't have the respect for it.
Poetry isn't for anyone. The problem is that it became a trend to right depressing poetry and most were simply doing because of the trend itself.
People are often afraid to look inside themselves and that's a big reason too...

"Please. Don't finish that sentence...

I'm imagining what it would be like,

to be the words hanging from your lips... ♥" Gaaah! Amazing!

And

"Lo, the heart
where sin is sadly knocking."
